Choosing the right images

Images are a great tool to make the site look more inviting and get the message across. At the same time choosing the wrong images can make the site look messy and hinder accessibility.

Copyright

If you’re caught using an image that you do not have rights to use, at the very least you will be forced to remove the infringing images from publication.

If legal action is taken, you can be subject to civil action in the copyright owner’s jurisdiction and actual and statutory damages that could be financially devastating.

And with certain deliberate violations, you could be subject to criminal penalties carrying massive fines and long prison terms.

Available images

You can access your File Manager to download images that are available for you to use supplied as part of your website.

What to avoid

  • Images that are busy and crowded
  • Images that contain text, more than just a simple single message, as it will not pass accessibility standards nor will the words be used as part of search results. WCAG: Images/Posters with Complex Text
